Can you take medical cannabis abroad from the UK?
Sometimes, with the right paperwork, and never through some airports. Pick a destination to see where you stand.

Destination check · for UK prescription holders
Spain
Visitors carrying controlled medicines above a set quantity need a permit from Spain's medicines agency, AEMPS. For cannabis the limit is 15 days of treatment.
WHAT TO DO
Email your application, medical certificate, prescription, passport and tickets as PDFs to estupefacientes_viajeros@aemps.es at least 10 days before you travel.

The short answer
A UK prescription does not travel with you. The rules of each country you land in, or pass through, decide what you can carry. UK residents can’t use the Schengen “Article 75” certificate that EU patients rely on, because it is only issued to people who live in a Schengen country. Some destinations accept a prescription and a clinic letter, some need a permit in advance, and some will prosecute you whatever your paperwork says.

Before any trip
Four things to carry, every time.
Tick them off as you pack. Keep everything in your hand luggage, never in the hold.
At UK airports you don’t need to declare your medicine unless someone asks. Airlines set their own rules, so check with yours before you fly.

Why the EU certificate isn’t for you
Schengen is not the EU, and the UK is in neither.
The Article 75 certificate lets people who live in a Schengen country carry prescribed controlled medicines to other Schengen countries for up to 30 days. Visitors from outside, including the UK, follow each country’s own rules.

THE TRANSIT TRAP
A connecting flight counts.
If you change planes in Dubai, Doha or Singapore, you are under that country’s drug laws while you are there, even if you never leave the airport. Do not carry cannabis through these hubs. A connection in the USA puts you under US federal law. Book a route that avoids them.
Plan backwards from your flight
- 4–6 WEEKSAsk your clinic for a travel letter. Most issue them free, but allow several weeks.
- 4 WEEKSContact the embassy of every country on your route, including stopovers. Ask for the answer in writing.
- 10+ DAYSApply for any permit the destination needs. Spain asks for at least 10 days.
- DEPARTUREOriginal packaging, prescription, letter and ID, all in your hand luggage. Only what the trip needs.
Let our agent plan it
Tell it where you’re going. It checks the whole route.
The checker above covers ten countries. We built the Cannavec Travel Planner to cover the rest: it checks where you’re flying from, where you’re going and where you change planes against our regulation knowledge base, then writes your plan in four parts, with a source for every rule.

Questions people ask
Travelling with a prescription, answered.
Can I fly within the UK with medical cannabis?
Yes. With a valid UK prescription it is lawful to carry throughout the UK. Keep it in its pharmacy packaging in your hand luggage, with your prescription and clinic letter. You don't need to declare it unless you are asked, but check your airline's own policy first.
How much can I take abroad?
Only what you need for the trip. The International Narcotics Control Board notes that countries usually limit personal supplies to about 30 to 90 days, and some set their own caps: Spain allows at most 15 days of cannabis treatment.
Can I use the EU's Schengen certificate?
No. The Article 75 certificate is issued only to people who live in a Schengen country. UK residents follow each destination's own rules instead.
Does a connecting flight matter?
Yes. While you change planes you are under that country's drug laws. Do not carry cannabis through the UAE, Qatar or Singapore, and remember that a US connection puts you under US federal law.
Can I take medical cannabis to the USA?
No. Cannabis above 0.3% THC is illegal under US federal law, which applies at every border whatever the state.
What should my clinic travel letter say?
Your name and date of birth, the prescriber's name and GMC number, the clinic's contact details, the medicine and its cannabinoid profile, your daily dose, your travel dates and the reason it was prescribed.
